Visit the Dig

This year we will be on site from the 27th July to the 15th August. We dig from Monday through to Saturday.

We’d be delighted to see you on the site.

Please note that Basing House is managed by Hampshire Cultural Trust, and as such there is an entry fee to the site. You can plan your visit to the site on the Trust’s website:

We are in the trench from 9.30am to 5pm (we do post-ex work before and after those hours). The best time to visit will be once the dig is underway, so we recommend after the 29th July.

If you’d like to arrange a visit for a particular group, please contact us so that we can discuss your requirements (and make sure that we have enough biscuits available in the site hut!).

The excavation is part of the training programme for undergraduate students from the University of Southampton, and so we’d love to give them the opportunity to give a tour of the excavations.

Basing House is a large outdoor site, and the trench is a good fifteen minutes walk from the main car park. There is some good information about accessibility on the Hampshire Cultural Trust website, so do check there before you visit: http://hampshireculturaltrust.org.uk/content/access-information-1

We recommend that you wear sturdy shoes, as there is uneven terrain across the site as soon as you leave the pathways.

There is limited accessible parking on the site, but this is five minutes walk from the trench. If this presents a challenge, contact us so that we can discuss transportation to the trench.

Our trench is easy to find, as we are located this season just behind the hut that has the LEGO model of Basing House in it. When you come to the site, cross over the Basingstoke Canal bridge and you will see the trench up on a ledge to the left of the LEGO model hut. If you pick up a map of the site from the Visitor Centre, look for the big Well marked at the edge of the New House, and you will find us.

See you at the trench!

The site directors welcome you to Basing House 2015 summer season.
